POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - John Reed won the 5000 meters and four others had runner-up finishes on the second day of the Liberty League Men's Track & Field Championship, but Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) finished in third place in the conference meet, ending a 12-year reign as league champions. RPI had 145 total points, which trailed Ithaca College (211) and the University of Rochester (182).

A graduate student, Reed was the first to cross the finish line in what was a dominant performance by the Engineers in the 5000 meters. He boasted a time of 14:29.29 and was one of four from Rensselaer to finish in the top 5. Matt Lecky was second in 14:32.29, Cory Kennedy was third in 14:39.37 and Jonathan Craun was fifth in 14:53.93. On Friday, Reed was second in the 10000 meters and Kennedy was fifth in the 3000 Steeple.

RPI had two of the top 5 in the 1500 meters with Davis Piercy earning runner-up (3:55.98) and Matthew Smalling placing fifth (4:03.93). Piercy, a junior who also ran the 800 meters (7th place), was .43 behind Scott Sikorski of Rochester for the win.

Also placing second was senior Josh Cohen, who threw the discus 44.90 meters a day after a fourth place finish in the hammer. He was less than a meter from winning with his effort, which came on his final throw. Kevin Danaher of Ithaca won with a toss of 45.41.

And in the triple jump, Jacob Haqq was the runner up with an effort of 14.03 meters. He was .17 from victory, which went to Cole Goodman of Rochester.

Earning a third place finish for Rensselaer was Luke Kovalcin in the high jump as he went 1.83 meters.

Josh Dobransky was fourth in the 100 Hurdles (16.32) and the 4x400 relay team was fourth with a time of 3:26.14.

A select number of competitors will continue to compete in attempts to qualify for the NCAA Championship with the next opportunity coming on May 16 at Swarthmore.
