TROY, N.Y. – After two scoreless periods of hockey, sophomore
Meg Hildner collected her first collegiate goal in the third period, and senior
Amanda Rampado made 30 saves as the Rensselear Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team took down St. Lawrence by a final score of 2-0 at the Houston Field House on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, RPI improves to 6-17-1 overall and 2-10-1 in ECAC Hockey, while St. Lawrence falls to 11-13-1 and 5-6-1 in ECAC Hockey play.
Despite both sides having multiple scoring chances, the game remained scoreless through the first two periods of play. Both Rampado and SLU's Lucy Morgan kept things square, as Rampado had 20 saves and Morgan seven after the first 40 minutes.
Then just over eight minutes into the third period, Hildner connected on her goal. Hildner began the play dropping the puck to
Sarah Bukvic, who then proceeded and made a move toward the net. Trailing the play, Hildner then picked up the puck after Bukvic had the puck knocked of her stick while going for a shot. The sophomore then had a lane to the net, taking a wrist shot into the upper left corner to give RPI the 1-0 lead.
The Engineers maintained the lead into the late stages of the third. Pushing for offense, St. Lawrence pulled their goalie just before RPI collected a penalty, giving the Saints a 6-on-4 opportunity. However, a St. Lawrence blocked shot by
Marah Wagner from the blue line with just over 30 seconds to play dropped to the stick of
Ellie Kaiser in the right wing circle.
Kaiser took advantage of the opportunity, firing in near full ice shot into the empty net to give RPI the 2-0 lead, which stayed through the final horn.
Rampado finished the game with 30 saves to her name, while Morgan made 22 saves – including 17 in the third period – for St. Lawrence.
The Engineers return to the ice on Friday, January 20 at 6 p.m. when they head east to take on Harvard at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center.
