Dom Black scored 16 points, including five of the final 10 points, as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team withstood Bard College 53-44 in Liberty League action. The Engineers up their record to 12-3 overall and 6-2 in conference, while the Raptors fall to 5-10 and 2-6.
Trailing 44-43 with two minutes remaining in the second half, RPI got a three pointer from
Chuck Clemons at 1:58 to take a 45-44 lead. Black, who had the assist on the bucket by Clemons, nailed a trey of his own with 59 seconds left and then hit a pair of free throws for a 51-44 advantage with 37 seconds showing on the clock.
Jonny Angbazo made it a 10-0 run with a pair from the free throw line for the final margin.Â
The game was close throughout with the largest lead being seven points until the Engineers made their run at the end. Bard was ahead 10-3 six minutes into the contest and from that point on it was nothing more than a two possession game for either side.Â
After being held to 17 points on 25.9 percent (7 of 27) in the first half, the Engineers scored 36 points in the second half. They connected on better than 50 percent (11 of 21) of their shots, while keeping the Raptors to 41.6 percent (10 of 24) in the final 20 minutes. Overall, the home team was held to 34.0 percent shooting (18 of 53) shooting to RPI's 37.5 percent (18 of 48).
Rensselaer had 32 rebounds, 10 steals, and 13 turnovers and the Raptors had 33 rebounds, 10 steals, and 14 turnovers.The Engineers were 10 of 12 from the free throw line and Bard was 2 for 2.
Black, a graduate student guard, finished with team-highs in points (16) and rebounds (7), along with an assist and two steals. Clemons added 12 points and
Brian Kelly had 11.
Greg Farrow of Bard led all scorers with a career-high 23 points, including five three pointers. Tyler Bruns was next on the squad with eight points.
