Men’s Hockey Topped by Union in Mayor’s Cup

Engineers Fall to Dutchmen at MVP Arena

ALBANY, N.Y. – Union goaltender Connor Murphy held the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute men's hockey team off the scoreboard on Saturday night, as the Engineers fell to the Dutchmen by a final score of 6-0 in the Mayor's Cup game held at MVP Arena in downtown Albany.

With the loss, RPI moves to 10-15-1 overall, while Union improves to 10-14-2. The game was played as a non-league game between the two programs.

Union got things started at the 12:17 mark of the first period, as Caden Villegas scored to make it 1-0 Dutchmen. His goal came on the doorstep after an initial save by RPI goaltender Jack Watson. Ben Tupker followed that goal up with one just minutes later at the 16:46 mark of the first period, with Nic Petruolo and Owen Farris assisting on both tallies for Union. Tupker tipped a puck thrown toward the net by Petruolo, as they went into the locker room with a 2-0 lead after the first period.

The Dutchmen scored another two goals in the second period, before scoring another pair in the final frame to take the win. Ville Immonen made it 3-0 in favor of Union at the 2:09 mark as he found himself all alone in the slot and scored over the left shoulder of Watson. Tyler Watkins then connected with the first of two power play goals for the Dutchmen with just seconds left on the clock in the second as he took a slapshot from the right wing circle to give Union the 4-0 lead.

In the third period, Josh Nixon made it 5-0 Union at the 2:24 mark as he tipped in a puck in front of the off a pass from Nate Hanley, this time beating RPI's Brett Miller – who took the spot in goal for Watson as the beginning of the third period. Carter Korpi capped the evening for the Dutchmen at the 9:58 mark with his goal to make it 6-0. He broke down the ice out of the penalty box, and scored on a break away to seal it for Union.

Jack Watson made 12 saves on the evening for RPI, while Miller added four in the third period. Union's Connor Murphy stopped all 28 RPI shots on net on the evening.

The Engineers return to the ice on Friday, February 3 at 7 p.m. when they head to Ithaca to take on Cornell.
