Men's Hockey Edged by No. 10 Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – After holding a 2-0 lead after the first period, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team surrendered four unanswered goals as they fell to the No. 10 Providence Friars by a final score of 4-2 on the road. The loss moves RPI to 0-4-0 overall on the season, while Providence improves to 4-1-0.

Danny Ciccarello broke the ice at the 12:54 mark of the first period, scoring on a puck in front of the net from Jack Brackett and John Evans to put RPI ahead early. The Engineers pushed the lead to 2-0 in the final minute of the first period as Ryan Brushett collected his first goal as an Engineer on assists from Sutter Muzzatti and Nick Strom.

As RPI held the lead and went to the power play in the second period, Providence was able to break through and score short-handed, as Chase Yoder beat Carson Cherepak for the first time on the night to cut the lead to 2-1.

The Engineers and Cherepak continued to hang onto the lead until late in the second period, as Hudson Malinoski scored on a pass from Tage Harding and Cam McDonald. Malinoski connected on a one-timer from the left circle to even things up at 2-2.

With the game tied, Yoder scored on short-handed for the second time on the night to put Providence up for good at the 11:37 mark before the Friars put in an empty netter at the 18:53 mark to seal the deal for the nationally-ranked Providence squad.

Cherepak ended the night with 38 saves in net – including 16 in the first period. Philip Svedeback made 16 in net for the Friars in the win.

RPI returns to action in two weeks on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. when they head over to Schenectady to take on Union in ECAC Hockey action before their home opener against the Garnet Chargers the following night on Nov. 4.
