TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team battled with the No. 3 Colgate Raiders at the Houston Field House on Friday night, bringing a tied 3-3 game late in the third period before a Colgate goal gave the Raiders a 4-3 victory. With the win, Colgate goes to 6-1-0 and 1-0-0 in league play, while the Engineers fall to 6-2-3 and 2-1-0 in ECAC Hockey.
Colgate jumped on the board in the first period thanks to a goal from Sydney Morrow on assists from Sydney Bard and Nina Brick before the Raiders pushed that to a 2-0 lead early in the second period as Brick got on the board. Kaia Malachino and Madeline Palumbo added assists on the play.
As it looked Colgate had room to breathe, freshman
Aylah Cioffi scored just 52 seconds after the Raiders' second goal as she got the puck in behind the defense and pushed the puck through the five-hole as RPI cut the lead back to 2-1.
Morgann Skoda and Andrea Trnková earned assists on the play.
With time ticking down in the second period, the Engineers found their equalizer off the stick of
Maddy Papineau, as she corralled the puck at her feet, skated in front of the net from the right-side circle, and finished from the slot in the top left corner of the goal to even the score at 2-2. That score remained into the final frame of the game.
Malachino and Skoda traded goals early in the third period, as the Raiders and Engineers battled back-and-forth to a 3-3 score with just under 15 minutes to remaining in the game. Despite catching a break on a goal called back in the third period, the Engineers surrendered the game-winning goal at the 9:30 mark of the third period on the power play.
Dara Greig was the beneficiary of the power play tally for the Raiders, with assists going to Sydney Morrow and Elyssa Biederman to make it 4-3 Colgate. RPI pushed the tempo as the clock ran down, putting a flurry of shots on net in the final minute of play with an empty net. However, Colgate's Kayle Osborne held on for the win – making 12 saves in the third period.
RPI's
Amanda Rampado was equally as impressive in the net, making 33 saves on the night in her first official loss of the season.
The Engineers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. when they play host to No. 9 Cornell at Houston Field House.
