CANTON, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team used a goal just eight minutes into the game from graduate student
Brady Van Epps as the No. 5 seeded Engineers defeated the fourth-seeded St. Lawrence Saints by a 1-0 final on Tuesday afternoon in the Liberty League First Round.
RPI wasted no time getting on the board, as
Julio Rodriguez found Van Epps for the early score. Van Epps took a shot that found the bottom right corner of the net to give the Engineers the early 1-0 lead.
With 14 minutes remaining in the second half, the Engineers had another solid scoring chance, with a bouncing ball in the box finding it's way toward the goal line. With two sliding players from each side going after the ball, St. Lawrence got the best of it, keeping the ball out of the net and keeping the Engineers at a 1-0 lead.
However, RPI goalkeeper
Colin Such and the rest of the Engineers defense locked things down, and held on for the win to move onto Friday's semifinal round.
St. Lawrence peppered in 21 shots on the day – including 16 in the second half. However, only seven were on target, and all stopped by Such.
RPI will move onto Friday's semifinal round, where they will take on top-seeded Hobart in Geneva. Kickoff for the game is slated for 2:30 p.m.
