TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's soccer team used a goal in each half on Tuesday afternoon to defeat the fifth-seeded Clarkson Golden Knights by a final score of 2-1 in the Liberty League First Round.
The Engineers were the first to strike, as
Izzy O'Clair was the recipient of some quick passing from
Bryanna Swinson and
Gwen Barnes inside the 18. O'Clair then found the back of the net, giving RPI the early 1-0 lead in the 16
th minute of the first half.
Clarkson evened things up in the 23
rd minute, as Chloe Hodge scored an unassisted tally as she slipped it past Meagan Wampner to bring things back to a 1-1 score.
As things moved through the half, both sides refused to give an inch until the Engineers took it at the 63
rd minute.
Brooke Miller scored an unassisted goal as well, pushing RPI to the 2-1 lead.
Wampner hung strong in the back end of the game, as Clarkson outshot RPI 21-7 – with 12 on net - including 15 shots in the second half.
RPI will move onto Friday's semifinal round, where they will take on top-seeded William Smith in Geneva in the front end of a doubleheader with the RPI men's team in their semifinal matchup. Kickoff for the matchup is to be determined.
