BEMIDJI, Minn. – Two second period goals by freshman Morgan Skoda and
Nyah Philip led the way for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon, as a goal from newcomer
Isabelle Hardy capped the scoring in the third period to give RPI a 3-1 victory over Bemidji State. With the win, RPI improves to 3-0-3, remaining unbeaten on the season while Bemidji State falls to 0-3-1 overall.
Both sides played the opening frame to a scoreless tie, setting up an offensive outburst for the second period. RPI broke the ice, as they talled their first power play goal of the season off the stick of Skoda at the 4:34 mark of the second period. Nina Chrisof and
Riena Jahnke each added assists on the play. However, the lead did not last long as the Beavers tied things back up at the 6:14 mark. Kayla Santl scored the equalizer for Bemidji State, moving things along with a 1-1 score.
The Engineers had the last say of the second period, thanks to a goal from Philip at the 12:19 mark. She found the net courtesy of
Georgia Bailey and
Asiah Taylor-Walters who added helpers on the play to give RPI the 2-1 lead heading into the third period.
RPI goaltender
Amanda Rampado kept the Beavers off the board through the third period, as the Engineers added cushion at the 12:14 mark.
Isabelle Hardy collected the second power play score of the evening, as Philip and
Sophia Jones each collected assists on the third tally. That gave RPI the 3-1 with just under eight minutes to play in the game, as they hung on for the win.
Ellie Kaiser led the way with five shots, while Christof added three as well. Rampado was strong in net, making 30 saves. Her counterpart, Bemidji State's Abbie Thompson racked up 20 saves on the evening in the loss.
The Engineers return to action on Friday, Oct. 13 at the Houston Field House, as they play host to the Syracuse Orange at 6 p.m. for Reunion and Homecoming Weekend on campus.
