TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team scored three goals apiece in the first two periods before securing a 6-1 victory over the Assumption University Greyhounds at Houston Field House Saturday night. With the win, RPI improves to 7-7-3 overall on the season, while Assumption falls to 4-10-1 overall.
Nina Christof started the outpour of scoring for the Engineers, scoring at the 11:44 mark of the opening period to give RPI the 1-0 lead as she scored from the right wing circle off a faceoff win from
Marah Wagner. Shortly after at the 12:20 mark, sophomore
Michelle Nutescu scored her first collegiate goal from the blue line to make it 2-0 RPI.
The Engineers scored their third goal late in the opening frame, as graduate student
Taylor Zahirnyi also scored from the blue line for her first goal of the season to push things to a 3-0 RPI lead.
Assumption broke up the RPI streak at 4:07 mark of the second period, thanks to a putback goal off a
Amanda Rampado save from Sheridan Terrazzano on the power play to make it 3-1 score.
RPI poured on another three goals in after that, with
Isabelle Hardy scoring a pair at the 9:45 and 16:11 marks while
Sabrina Beaudoin scored between Hardy's scores at 11:56 as the Engineers extended their lead out to a 6-1 lead.
MJ Alexander was in on the first two goals of the period with assists, with Asiah Taylor Walters,
Ellie Kaiser,
Nyah Philip, and
Sophia Jones earning helpers in the period.
The Engineers outshot the Greyhounds 37-17 on the game, with 13 shots apiece coming in the first two periods. Rampado made some key saves for RPI on breakaways, finishing with 16 on the game. Alexander finished the game with three assists on the game.
RPI returns to action on Friday, Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. when they take on the Princeton Tigers on the road in ECAC Hockey action.
