TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team struggled on Sunday afternoon, as they were defeated by the Northeastern Huskies by a final score of 9-2 at the Houston Field House. RPI falls to 2-7-1 overall while Northeastern improves to 3-7-1 overall on the season.
Northeastern got the ball rolling early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first period thanks to goals from Liam Walsh, Matt Choupani, Alex Campbell, and Cam Lund. However as time ticked down, the Engineers got a spark from
Dovar Tinling, as he scored his first collegiate goal tossing the puck over the shoulder of Cameron Whitehead to make it 4-1 after the first period.
However, the spark didn't catch, as the Huskies poured it on in the second period, scoring five goals including three via the power play. The score stood 9-1 heading into the third period. Jack Williams scored twice in the period, with Alex Campbell, Justin Hryckowian, and Jackson Dorrington all collecting tallies.
Jake Gagnon scored the long goal of the third period for either side, tossing in a puck on a feed from
Jakob Lee and
Nick Strom to make it 9-2 – which stood through the final whistle.
Brett Miller and
Carson Cherepak combined for 30 saves on the afternoon, while Whitehead made 16 over his two periods of action.
RPI returns to action on Friday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. when they take on Quinnipiac in their return to ECAC Hockey action.
