Men's Basketball Cruises Past Colby-Sawyer

UTICA, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team rolled through their final game at the Utica University Classic on Saturday afternoon, as they defeated Colby-Sawyer College by a final score of 73-48. Senior Avery Eugster tallied 15 points win, moving RPI to 4-6 overall while Colby-Sawyer falls to 4-8.

The Engineers led all but 42 seconds of the game, giving up an opening bucket before PJ Scalisi knocked down a three-pointer on RPI's opening possession to put ahead to a 3-2 lead. RPI scored early and often, as the Engineers opened up a 16-point lead at the midway point. RPI held Colby-Sawyer to just seven field goals – with zero from three-point range - in the opening 20 minutes as they led 33-17.

The scoring continued into the second half, as RPI's lead grew to over 20 points – reaching as high as 27 points in the closing minutes. The Engineers forced 25 turnovers, converting that into 25 total points. RPI also won the paint battle, 38-32 over the game.

Along with Eugster's performance was a pair of 13-point efforts from Dylan Matchett and Jonny Angbazo, as Matchett also nabbed a team-high eight rebounds and four steals. Angbazo chipped in with six rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

Jaisan Parker led Colby-Sawyer with 15 points, while Bullen Taban put up a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Colby-Sawyer struggled on offense, shooting just 37 percent on the game – including a 2-for-11 mark from long range and 6-for-14 from the free throw line.

RPI returns to action on Friday, Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m. as they head to Saratoga Springs to take on Skidmore in Liberty League action.
