Men's Basketball Handled by St. Lawrence

CANTON, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team put three players in double figures in points, but the Engineers managed to make just five three pointers on 26 attempts (19.2%) against the St. Lawrence University zone defense in dropping a 56-53 Liberty League decision to the Saints. SLU improves to 14-7 overall and 10-5 in the conference, which puts it in sole possession of second place. RPI is now 15-7 and 9-6 and in a three-way tie for third place.

Jonny Angbazo had 12 points and eight rebounds, Will Rubin had 12 points and five boards, and Avery Eugster registered 11 points with four rebounds for the Engineers, who made 22 of 53 shots overall (41.5%).

St. Lawrence was paced by Will Engelhardt's 11 points, four rebounds, and five assists, while Trent Adamson scored 10 points with three rebounds and three blocked shots.

Rensselaer led by two with a less than two minutes left in the first half, but Carter Storey hit a corner three, which Adamson followed with consecutive buckets for a 24-22 lead. Storey stole the subsequent inbound pass and hit the buzzer-beater three to give St. Lawrence a five-point cushion at the break.

The Saints extended their lead to as many as 15-points at several points in the second half. Gavin Macaulay hit a pair of free throws with a minute left to put the Scarlet and Brown up by nine, which was enough to put the Engineers away despite them scoring on their final four possessions. Eugster, Brian Kelly, and Angbazo (twice) each had buckets in those closing minutes.
