Women's Basketball Wins to Clinch Playoff Bid

Potsdam, N.Y. - Nicole DaPra and Heather Converse both registered double-doubles and two others reached double figures in points as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team defeated Clarkson University 77-65 in a Liberty League game at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Engineers improve to 11-12 overall and 8-8 in the conference, which clinches a berth in the conference's six-team post-season tournament. RPI holds sole possession of fifth place with two games remaining and could climb into fourth, which comes with hosting a first round game. The seventh-place Golden Knights fall to 8-13 and 5-11.

The Golden Knights fell to 8-13 overall and 5-11 in conference games, while RPI improved to 11-12 and 8-8. Clarkson finishes off the regular-season next weekend at Skidmore and Union.

Clarkson got off to a solid start and led briefly in the first quarter, but two 3-pointers from Brielle Sharry in just over a minute put the Engineers on top by four. The Engineers expanded their lead in the early going of the second quarter, eventually extending the advantage to 10 points on a layup from Lolo Reynolds at 5:40. The Knights got back to within single digits on several occasions, and went into the locker room trailing by seven (34-27) when Cassidy Dumont scored on a last second jumper.

RPI came out of the break strong, going on a 15-2 run in the first five minutes, capped by a Converse layup at 5:05 to put the gap at 20 points. Clarkson would not go away, however, as the Knights buried a number of 3-pointers down the stretch of the third period. Mariah Benavides hit the first to spark the run, and Raelin Burns hit two 3-pointers to pull the Knights within eight. The Engineers recovered in the final moments of the quarter, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Danielle Strauff to put the lead at 14 points.

In the fourth, Clarkson was able to get back within single digits on a couple of occasions, including a 3-pointer from Dumont with just over a minute to go, but those were the last points of the game for the home team.

Both teams shot well in the second half, with RPI shooting 50.0% from the floor and Clarkson coming in just under that number with a 15-for-31 effort.

DaPra's double-double was 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Converse had 18 points and 11 boards. Reynolds had 12 points and six assists and Sharry contributed 14 points and six boards.

Clarkson's Cassidy Dumont scored her game-high 28 points on 12-for-23 shooting, while also adding five rebounds. Freshman Raelin Burns came off the bench to score 12 points, making both of her 3-point field goal attempts and shooting 3-for-5 from the field overall.
