TROY, N.Y. – Senior
Luke Murphy led an outpouring of offense on Wednesday evening, scoring five goals and dishing three assists as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team defeated Clark University by a final score of 17-2 at ECAV Stadium. With the win, RPI moves to 1-1 on the season, while Clark falls to 0-1 overall.
Sean Mullen kicked off the scoring in the first quarter, giving the Engineers a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into play. Clark then took advantage of a man-up opportunity at the 8:04 mark of the first quarter, scoring their first of two goals of the game thanks to Atttilio LaVecchia. Matt Wells then scored for the Cougars to make it 2-1 with 6:39 to play in the first quarter.
From that point, it was all Engineers as RPI scored 16 unanswered goals starting with the game-tying goal from Murphy with 3:34 to play in the first quarter. By the end of the first quarter, RPI held a 4-2 lead after
Sean Smith and
Trey Berry each scored as well.
The Engineers then scored six times in the second quarter and seven times in the third quarter to rack up a 17-2 score, with Smith capping the scoring with 10 seconds remaining in the third frame. Neither side scored in the final 15 minutes of play as RPI wrapped up the win.
Cooper Manzi,
Sean Mullen, and Smith each scored twice, while
Tyler Ruffini collected a goal and a pair of assists to lead a group of six that scored one goal apiece.
Angelo Venuto snagged 11 ground balls off a solid 11-for-15 showing on the faceoff, while
Garrett Volley and
Caleb Oswari each caused a trio of turnovers apiece. RPI outpaced Clark in shots on goal (38-16), ground balls (42-31), and face offs (16-7).
Leading the defensive effort for Clark was Zachary Conant and Sawyer Kindel with three ground balls apiece, while Conant added a pair of caused turnovers. Benjamin Hollerback had a team-high five shots on goal, and Casey McCullough made 16 saves in the cage coming off the bench.
The Engineers return to action this Sunday, February 26 at 2 p.m. when they hit the road to face DeSales University.
