ONEONTA, N.Y. – After outscoring Oneonta 11-1 in the second half led by a nine-point day from
Sophie Goddard, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team defeated the Red Dragons by a final score of 20-7 on the road Thursday. With the win, RPI moves to 1-0 on the season, while Oneonta falls to 0-1.
The Engineers started hot, scoring ten seconds into the first quarter when
Rylie Maready found
Megan Shay following the draw control. RPI scored five goals within six minutes of playing time, with Goddard netting three. The Red Dragons got on the board when Cassidy Moore found Margaret Byrne to make it 6-1. RPI responded at 1:10 on a
Lauren DeLeo free position before Megan Foiles found the back of the net before the end of the quarter to make it 7-2 in favor of the Engineers.
Goddard scored her fourth goal of the day to start the second before Oneonta scored three straight goals, with Foiles adding two more for a hat trick. The Red Dragons proceeded to go on a four-goal run to cut the RPI lead to 8-6 with 5:08 to play in the second quarter. However, Shay stepped up once again for RPI, scoring with 2:42 to play in the second frame to give RPI a 9-6 lead heading into halftime.
RPI shut out Oneonta in the third quarter while scoring six goals – three coming off the stick of Goddard. The Engineers scored five more times in the fourth, with Lauren Mancini picking up the lone second half goal for the Red Dragons at the 4:53 mark of the fourth.
Goddard finished her day with seven goals with two assists, with all ten shots on-goal attempts. Shay added five goals and four groundballs. In total, eight Engineers found the back of the net. Goalkeeper
Jenny Canfield made 12 saves in the win.
Foliles led Oneonta with three goals and took seven shots on goal. Mancini scored twice with one assist. Moore recorded two assists with four groundballs. Junior Courtney Gallagher made 12 saves in goal.
RPI returns to action on Tuesday, February 28 at 5 p.m. hen they head to Massachusetts to take on Westfield State.
