Men's Basketball Loses in Final in Overtime

CANTON, N.Y. - One of the top defensive teams in Division III, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) allowed just 11 points in the second half to force overtime, but St. Lawrence University prevailed by scoring all eight points in the extra session to defeat the Engineers 50-42 in the championship game of the Liberty League Tournament. The No. 2 seeded Saints improve to 19-7 and earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. RPI finishes 19-9.

Senior Will Engelhardt led the home team with 17 points and 10 rebounds. He scored 11 in the first half, including three three pointers, and his other six points in the overtime. He was aided by Trent Adamson's 12 points, four rebounds, and four blocked shots, while Trey Syroka scored 10 points with six assists. He made two free throws with nine seconds left in the extra period to conclude the scoring.

RPI was paced by Jonny Angbazo, who scored 11 points with nine rebounds. Avery Eugster tallied nine points with four rebounds and Dom Black had six points, six rebounds, five assists, and a steal.

After falling behind 8-4 at the start, the Engineers used an 11-2 run to gain a 15-10 lead with 10:26 left to play in the first half. Chuck Clemons had a pair of threes and Avery Eugster added a long distance shot of his own in the sequence. Engelhardt followed with a trey and Eugster scored on a layup to make it 17-13.

The Saints used a 7-0 run to build a four point lead and RPI snapped a scoring drought of more than five minutes when Angbazo made a layup with 3:25 left. A 7-2 stretch for SLU over the rest of the half, including an and-1 by Sroka with 0.3 seconds remaining made it a 10-point margin, 31-21, at the break.

While the Saints shot 56.5 percent (13 of 23) from the field in the first half, they were held to just 21.7 percent (5 of 23) in the second half by RPI, which went into the weekend allowing only 57.3 points per game. St. Lawrence was 1 for 8 from behind the arc (12.5%), though RPI hit just 2 of 13 (15.3%) from long range. Rensselaer was 8 of 22 (36.3%) over the final 20 minutes, which saw St. Lawrence lead until a pair of Will Rubin free throws knotted the score at 42-42 with 3:19 to play. Neither team scored again in regulation, despite four attempts by the Saints and two by the Engineers.

In overtime, Engelhardt hit a jumper on the initial possession and then did the same with 1:48 left for a 46-42 lead. He made two free throws with 22 seconds left before RPI had one last shot that rimmed out. Syroka closed things out with nine seconds remaining.
