Baseball Draws Tie on Opening Day

Engineers, Golden Bears End Up Even in Season Opener

TROY, N.Y. – A last inning run and a key three-run home run from Martin Marintchev led the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to an 8-8 tie with Western New England in each program's first game of the season. Each side is now 0-0-1 to begin the 2023 season.

After a clean first inning, Western New England blew up for five runs in the top of the second inning, highlighted by a two-run home run from Paul Villecco that sailed over the right field fence. CJ Willis also had a hand in the next pair runs of the inning, knocking in two with an RBI single before he and John Bova combined for a double steal to make their lead 5-0.

RPI broke the ice and got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Ayush Krishnappa collected the first of his three hits on the afternoon, doubling down the left field line to score Jack Moncur. Krishnappa then crosse the plate when Aidan Hicks singled to center to make it 5-2 in favor of the Golden Bears.

Western New England briefly extended their lead in the top of the sixth with an Aaron Cole RBI triple before the Engineers struck for two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-4 Golden Bears.

In the bottom of the seventh after Cole Paquin and George Rainer both reached, Marintchev then turned on a pitch and send a line drive over the left field fence for a go-ahead tally for the Engineers to put the score 7-6.

The Golden Bears then struck for a single run in each of the next two innings to regain the lead back heading into the bottom of the ninth. After Marintchev reached base on a walk to begin the ninth, Krishnappa roped a ball through the right side of the field for an RBI single, scoring pinch runner Phillip Li to tie the game at 8-8. The next batter grounded into a double play, ending the game through nine innings.

Krishnappa's three hits led the RPI offense, followed up with a multi-hit effort from Rainer and Robbie Reddington. The Engineers pitching staff held the Golden Bears to only five hits, but walked eight batters. Villecco and Willis each led Western New England with a hit and two RBI's apiece. Matt Lauria and Jared Kuryn each had three strikeouts in relief.

RPI returns to the diamond on Saturday, March 4 when they faceoff with Wartburg College at 10 a.m. in their spring break trip in Florida.
