Bears’ Iginla Nets Hat Trick in Engineers Loss

TROY, N.Y. – Brown Goaltender Kaley Doyle made 33 saves, and freshman Jade Iginla scored a hat trick as the Bears defeated the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team by a final score of 4-1 at the Houston Field House Friday night. RPI snaps a three-game winning streak and falls to 9-19-1 overall and 4-11-1 in ECAC Hockey, while Brown improves to 7-16-1 and 5-12-0 in ECAC Hockey play.

Brown jumped in front in the first period, as Iginla scored her team-best 12th goal of the season to give the Bears a 1-0 lead at the 10:09 mark. Iginla picked up the puck in the right wing circle, and snapped a wrist shot inside the left post for the score. India McDadi assisted on the play.

Iginla struck again just 18 seconds into the second period, as a puck shot from the blue line by RPI was blocked and made its way to Iginla. She skated one-on-one through the neutral zone by her RPI defender, corralling and sliding the puck through the legs of Amanda Rampado to give the Bears a 2-0 lead.

The Bears added to their lead when Maya Mangiafico poked a lose puck from the crease into the net. A shot originally saved by Rampado stuck around, where Mangiafico found it in the scramble and gave a one-handed effort to make it 3-0 Brown.

RPI got on the board before the end of the second, as Ellie Kaiser picked up a puck from Taylor Larsen up near the blue line. She then skated around and in toward the left wing circle, snapping off a wrist shot that found it's way into the net to make it 3-1 through two periods of play.

Brown added an empty netter late in the third period, as Iginla tipped a puck thrown up the ice by Cassidy Piersiak that found its way into the empty net to give the Bears the 4-1 score. The Bears kept the Engineers off the board over the final 1:10 of the game to hang on for the win. Rampado wrapped up her night in net for RPI making 16 saves.

The Engineers return to the ice tomorrow, Saturday, February 4 at the Houston Field House when they play host to No. 2 nationally ranked Yale at 3 p.m.
