CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Ryan Gebhardt and Zach Bleil combined for eight goals and four assists and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) men's lacrosse team scored five of the seven fourth quarter goals in defeating No. 19 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 14-10 in a non-league game at Roberts Field. The homestanding Engineers improve to 4-1, while the visiting Engineers drop to 3-2.
After RPI pulled to within one goal, 9-8, with four seconds left in the third quarter on a tally from
Anthony Mazzella, Gebhardt needed just 55 seconds into the final frame to make it a two-goal advantage. The graduate student increased MIT's lead to 11-8 with his fourth of the game and 28th of the season three minutes later.Â
Rensselaer got to within a pair when
Cooper Manzi scored at the 10:38 mark but neither team found the back of the net for the next seven minutes.
Bleil's third of the game off an assist from Gebhardt on a man-up opportunity put the score at 12-9 and he added another marker at 2:43 for a 13-9 edge.
Sean Smith notched one for RPI, his second of the day, with 1:01 remaining and the Engineers gained possession off the face off but turned the ball over. MIT cleared the ball successfully and Heath Nilsen scored with 16 seconds showing on the clock.
The first half was low scoring with MIT leading 5-2 at halftime after owning the advantages in shots (24-12), shots on goal (13-7), and ground balls (19-13). Rensselaer turned the ball over 19 times, including 13 in the second quarter, while MIT had 13 miscues.Â
Ten goals were scored in the third frame with RPI collecting six of them to get to within a goal. In addition to Mazzella's, Smith,
Luke Murphy, Manzi,
Cian Hilkewich, and
Tyler Ruffini scored. Hilkewich's came man-up off an assist from Murphy, who had a team-high three points (1 goal, 2 assists).Â
Angelo Venuto led the Engineers with eight ground balls, along with an assist and a caused turnover with 13 face off wins (27 attempts).
Joseph Perry went the whole way in the cage, stopping 17 shots.
Devin McCabe had eight saves for the home team, which finished with a 59-28 advantage in shots, including 31-18 on goal. MIT picked up 42 ground balls to RPI's 31.
