TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team ended their week in Arizona on a high note, winning another two games to mark a five-game winning streak as they defeated University of Redlands and Dickinson College on Sunday night. With the wins, RPI moves to 6-4 on the season as they head back to New York.
Game 1
It didn't take long for RPI to jump into a 3-0 lead against Redlands, as
Alex Ledger smacked a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to catapult the Engineers to their 7-5 win.
After Redlands battled back with a run in the top of the second,
Erin Askins took advantage of her second at-bat of the day with an RBI double to make it 4-1 RPI. Redlands scored again in the third before
Caroline Peel and
Gabby Comeau each hit RBI singles in the bottom of the third to extend the lead out to 6-2.
Both sides scored in the fifth, as Redlands began to battle back once more to make it 7-4 after five. However, the RPI pitcher
Erika Holowka shut the door and scattered only one more run in the seventh to take the 7-5 victory.
Holowka pitched all seven innings, scattering 12 hits and striking out four. Comeau and Ledger each finished the game with a pair of hits, while Alexis Campos and Brooklyn Bard each had three hits for the Bulldogs.
Game 2
After two scoreless innings to start the game between RPI and Dickinson,
Callista Adorno and Ledger smacked back-to-back doubles to open a 3-0 lead in the top of the third.
Dickinson fought back, as an RBI single and an RBI triple cut the Engineer lead to 3-2 heading into the sixth inning. That's where the score stayed until the seventh inning, as Comeau book ended the week with an RBI single through the left side of the infield to score
Erin Askins to make it a 4-2 lead.
Brooke Sroczinski came on in relief of
Alexis Cooke in the seventh inning, shutting the door and retiring the three batters she faced to help RPI collect the win. Cooke pitched six innings, scattering seven hits and only one e4arned run while striking out five.
Comeau and Adorno each batted a pair of hits on the evening, while four others collected hits as well.
