TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team won their third straight game for the second time this season, as they downed the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts by a final score of 19-8 at Robison Field Wednesday evening in non-league action. With the win, RPI improves to 8-4-1 overall on the season, while MCLA falls to 6-5 on the season.
The Engineers came out of the gate swinging, putting up a six-run first inning highlighted by an RBI triple from
Ayush Krishnappa that scored
Jack Moncur and
Julian Scarpa.
The Trailblazers got on the board in the third inning, as a home run from Austin Rachiele and an RBI double from Randy Adams made the score 6-3 RPI heading into the bottom of the third. The Engineers responded in a big way, scoring another six run inning that began with a solo home run from Moncur. RPI held a 12-3 lead until the sixth inning.
In the sixth, the Trailblazers tacked on an unearned run on an error, moving the score to 12-4 in favor of RPI. The Engineers then ran off more runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings as
Aidan Hicks and
Stephen Koval added RBI triples to their names as the lead grew to 19-4 RPI.
MCLA didn't go down without a fight, as the Trailblazers added four runs in the top of the ninth as a pair of RBI singles and a triple of their own added on four runs before
Evan Mahns shut the door and finished off the game with a strikeout.
Julian Fong-McAdams pitched 4.2 innings, scattering six hits and three runs in his first win of the season. Offensively, Hicks finished the day 4-for-5 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored.
Martin Marintchev added a 3-for-4 day, while
Julian Scarpa also chipped in with a trio of hits. Moncur led the team with three RBI.
Adams led the Trailblazers with a three hit day, while Rachiele and Noel Medina each had two hits apiece. Adams and Rachiele each added a pair of RBI, as did Matt Belfance.
The Engineers return to action on Friday, March 24 at 1 p.m. when they play host to Skidmore in a doubleheader at Robison Field to open Liberty League play.
