Box Score WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team battled back to get within two goals of Williams College late in the third quarter but the Ephs outscored the Engineers 5-1 in the fourth on their way to a 13-6 victory over RPI in a non-league game. Rensselaer drops to 4-5 while Williams is now 4-1.
Zach Swanson had three goals for the visitors and three others had a goal apiece.
Cooper Manzi and
Cian Hilkewich both had two assists and
Angelo Venuto picked up a team-best seven ground balls.
Jack Greene tallied four pickups along with three caused turnovers. In the cage,
Joseph Perry stopped 12 shots.
On the other end for the Ephs, Matthew Freitas recorded 16 saves on 22 shots with Calvin Caputo leading the offense with six goals and two assists. Eight of his 13 shots were on goal. Jesse Shapiro scored three times and two others had two goals and an assist.
Williams jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second quarter before the Engineers tallied three of the next four to get within 6-4.
Luke Murphy and
Tyler Ruffini both scored man-up - both off assists from Hilkewich - and
Anthony Mazzella scored at even strength.
Caputo's second of the game made it 7-4 at 5:40 of the third quarter but Swanson answered just over a minute later for the two-goal margin. The Ephs ran off three straight goals for a 10-5 lead before
Evan Whatley set up Swanson at 10:06 to make it 10-6. Caputo scored the final three goals.
