TROY, N.Y. – A three-run third inning was the catalyst for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team on Tuesday afternoon, as they defeated the Castleton University Spartans by a final score of 5-3 in non-league action. With the win, RPI moves to 10-6-1 overall on the season, while Castleton falls to 6-9 on the year.
After a clean first inning without a score, Castleton opened with the first run in the top of the second inning. A leadoff walk to Hunter Perki set up the run, as he eventually scored on an error later in the inning on a batted ball to third from Kannon Dush with two outs. The play gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
RPI responded back in a big way in the bottom of the third, as
Stephen Koval led off the inning with a leadoff double. That paved the way for a three-run inning by the Engineers, as an RBI single from
Martin Marintchev and two-RBI double from
Julian Scarpa put RPI ahead 3-1 after the third.
The score remained 3-1 until the fifth inning, as both sides traded a run apiece. Evan Keegan knocked an RBI double into center field to make it a 3-2 ballgame before
Joey Saia collected a sacrifice fly and RBI to score
Phillip Li in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-2 RPI.
Marintchev collected the padding for the Engineers in the bottom of the seventh, as his single to center scored Li once again to give RPI a 5-2 lead. Li walked to open the inning before stealing second to set up the single by Marintchev.
Despite a solo home run in the top of the eighth by Perki to pull Castleton back within two,
Rob Goldstein and
Sam Stone held down the fort in the eighth and ninth innings to help the Engineers hang onto the 5-3 lead.
Stone collected his second save of the season, while
Andrew Gaughan pitched three innings in relief surrendering just one unearned run and striking out two. Marintchev led the offense with two hits and two RBI on the day. Scarpa also finished with his two RBI, while Li was the only Engineer to score twice.
For Castleton, Tyler McLain finished with three hits, while Jackson Card added a pair to his resume for the game. Starter Sam Crawford took the loss, his first of the season in three innings of work. Brayden Howr pitched 3.2 innings of relief, striking out six RPI batters.
The Engineers return to action tomorrow, Wednesday, March 29 at 3:30 p.m. when they play host to Middlebury College at Robison Field at Karl Steffen Ballpark.
