Engineers Concludes Florida Trip Wednesday

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team concluded their early season Florida trip on Wednesday morning, as the Engineers fell to the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) Goats by a final score of 16-2 in seven innings. RPI returns home this weekend sitting 3-2-1 after Wednesday's loss.

The goats scored early and often, hanging up seven runs in the top of the first inning. WPI collected five different RBI hits, with a pair of RBI doubles from DJ Brooks and Andrew Cash capping the inning. The Engineers and Goats traded runs in the second as the score stood 8-1 heading to the third.

Both teams stayed off the board until the fifth, until a sac fly from WPI's Kolby Robertson extended their lead to 9-1. Robertson then kickstarted a seven run seventh from the Goats, as a RBI triple from Joe Salvon highlighted the inning. Despite an RBI triple from Aidan Hicks to score Matt Chotiner in the bottom of the seventh, the game ended after seven innings with WPI taking the 16-2 win.

RPI collected three hits on the game, with Joey Saia notching two of them to go along with Hicks' RBI triple in the seventh. Andrew Gaughan tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless work for the Engineers, while Colby August threw two innings giving up just one hit and one earned run.

WPI's Kyle DeRoma knocked out three hits with a pair of RBI's and three runs scored. Jeffrey Brennan also scored three times, while Joseph Peregrim and Eric DePiero gave up one run apiece through the seven innings of work.

The Engineers return to action on Saturday, March 11 when they return home to Troy to play host to Colby College in a doubleheader at Robison Field at Karl Steffen Ballpark. First pitch for the twin bill is slated for 12 p.m.
