TROY, N.Y. – Four home runs in game one of a doubleheader at Robison Field lifted the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to a sweep of the St. Lawrence Saints by final scores of 10-7 and 5-2 Saturday afternoon. RPI improves to 18-9-1 overall and 5-3 in league play while St. Lawrence falls to 7-12 overall and 2-8 in Liberty League action.
Game 1
Despite an early three-run home run from Martin Martinchev, the Saints took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning after getting the go-ahead run with a bases loaded walk in the top of the inning.
Ryan Brewer delivered a go-ahead two-run jack in the bottom of the sixth, as RPI took a 5-4 lead. A double from St. Lawrence's Caleb Clark re-tied the game at 5-all after the top of the seventh inning.
RPI responded with another run in the bottom of the seventh – a go-ahead RBI single from Martinchev up the middle that kickstarted a big inning the following inning.
Jack Moncur and
Aidan Hicks both delivered long balls in the eighth to take a 10-5 lead.
Thomas Neuman pitched 5.1 innings scattering seven hits, walking two and striking out three in a no-decision. Cameron Hauer pitched the eighth and ninth innings in earning his second save of the season.
Game 2
Over the first two innings, RPI jumped to a 4-0 lead. An RBI triple from Hicks highlighted the scoring, as the Engineers'
Ben Koomey rolled through the St. Lawrence lineup.
Aidan Safar added to the Engineers' lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, sending a double to the right center field gap to give RPI a 5-0 lead.
Koomey fell one out short of a complete game, pitching 6.2 innings giving up six hits and two runs as he struggled in the seventh.
Bret Eirish came in for the final out of the game, earning his first save of the year.
The Engineers return to action on Sunday, April 17 when they play host to Clarkson at Robison Field for a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
