SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team opened their Liberty League slate with a bang, outscoring Skidmore College 10-2 over two games as the Engineers swept the Throughbreds by final scores of 4-0 and 6-2 Saturday afternoon. With the wins, RPI improves to 17-5 overall and 2-0 in league play while Skidmore falls to 7-14 overall and 0-2 in Liberty League action. The wins give RPI six wins in a row, and makes them winners in 16 of their last 17 games.
Game 1
Alexis Cooke and
Brooke Sroczinski combined for seven shutout innings in the circle to lead the Engineers to a 4-0 win in the opening game of the day.
Erin Askins reached to open the game, and scored on a groundout from
Gabby Comeau in the top of the first for an early 1-0 Engineers lead. The combo was apart of RPI's second run, as a wild pitch scored Askins. Comeau then scored on an RBI double by
Alex Ledger to the left center gap for a 3-0 RPI lead.
The score stayed pat until the top of the seventh inning, as
Catherine Worthington gave RPI some extra cushion with a single, as a defensive miscue by Skidmore allowed
Sydney Speanburg to score and make it 4-0 in favor of the Engineers.
Game 2
Freshman
Callista Adorno went a perfect 3-for-3 in the second game, as Sroczinski worked with
Erika Holowka on a combined seven inning effort in game two in a 6-2 win.
With a 2-0 lead into the top of the second, Ledger once again delivered an RBI double to the left center gap, scoring Adorno to give the Engineers a 3-0 lead.
Skidmore made their way onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning, as a bases loaded walk pushed the score to 3-1. Holowka finished the fourth, giving way to Sroczinski in the fifth after RPI added another run in the top of the inning.
Franny Casillas collected an RBI double for Skidmore in the fifth to make it 4-2 and put the Throughbreds within striking distance. But runs in the sixth and seventh innings by the Engineers ended the threat.
The Engineers return to action on Sunday, April 16 when they play host to Clarkson at Robison Field for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
