Six-Goal Fourth Lifts Men's Lacrosse, 13-7

CANTON, N.Y. - Joseph Perry made 20 saves, Sean Smith had four goals and an assist and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's lacrosse team scored six goals in the fourth quarter to pull away from No. 6 St. Lawrence University 13-7 in a Liberty League contest at Hall-Leet Stadium.

The win not only improves the Engineers to 8-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference, but seals a spot in the league's semifinals. RPI will host a game on May 5. The Saints, who are now 11-4 amd 3-3, are in a three-way tie for third place. The top six teams qualify for the post-season.

The Saints jumped out to the early lead, scoring four of the first five goals in the first quarter. A tally from Ben Hutchinson made it 4-1 St. Lawrence with 3:53 to play in the opening frame. However, a goal from Zach Swanson with 1:35 to play made it 4-2.

Swanson's goal was the start of a 6-0 run by the Engineers that was highlighted by a last-second goal from Swanson to end the first half. Jon Matkin scored at the 6:50 mark of the third quarter, book ending the RPI run before the Saints tallied a goal to make it 7-5 RPI into the fourth quarter.

The Engineers scored six times over the final 15 minutes, allowing just three second-half goals to the Saints as they pulled away for the 13-7 win. The Engineers took advantage of their man-up opportunities, scoring three times with the man-up advantage in the second half.

Luke Murphy and Anthony Mazzella each added three points apiece behind Smith's five point day, while the Engineers boasted seven different scorers.

For St. Lawrence, Cody Sipher and Paddy Condon each chipped in with two points apiece. Sipher was the only Saint with two goals on the day, while Condon was strong on the faceoff going 16-for-22. Michael Marinello made six saves on 19 shots on goal in the loss.

The Engineers return to action next Saturday, April 29 when they return to ECAV Stadium for their regular season finale and Senior Day against Ithaca College at 1 p.m.
