TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team celebrated their Senior Day and regular season home finale in style on Saturday afternoon, as a big second half led the Engineers to a 12-6 victory over the University of Rochester at ECAV Stadium. With the win, RPI improves to 10-4 overall and 5-4 in Liberty League play, while Rochester falls to 9-7 overall and 4-5 in league action.
The Engineer started strong, scoring the opening four goals of the game in the first seven minutes. All four goals came from separate players, as
Mia Banglmaier and
Rylie Maready each added assists with a goal apiece for two points early on.
The Yellow Jackets bounced back scoring the next five of six goals in the game – with the games equalizer coming with 3:37 left to play in the second quarter courtesy of Emma Little. That pushed the score to 5-5. However,
Ella Graff scored her second goal of the game with 1:22 to play, sending RPI to a 6-5 lead just before the half.
Graff's goal was the first of a 5-0 run throughout the third quarter, and a 7-1 run through the final whistle.
Sophie Goddard collected the first goal of the third quarter, while Graff scored her third and fourth goals of the game in the run. Banglmaier capped the third quarter with a goal with just one second remaining on the clock for a 10-5 RPI lead.
Gabbie Valle and
Quinn Wollard each scored for RPI in the final frame, while Rochester's Gracie Giannettino netted their lone goal of the second half with 10:50 on the clock in the fourth. Rochester struggled with yellow cards in the second half – compiling a total of seven on the game, which included two players with two apiece.
Graff added an assist to her four goals for a team-high five points, while Banglmaier finished with four points. Maready and
Lauren DeLeo each finished with three points apiece on a goal and two assists. Senior
Olivia Kimball came up big with 10 saves in the cage.
Giannettino led Rochester's attack with three points on a goal and two assists. Grace Crochiere scored two goals apiece, with three others adding goals in the box score. Goalkeeper Emily Geiss collected 12 saves in the loss.
The Engineers return to action on Saturday, April 29 at 12 p.m. when they take on Clarkson University in Potsdam for their regular season finale.
