Women’s Tennis Strikes for Win at Ithaca

Engineers Wrap Up No. 3 Seed in Upcoming Liberty League Championships

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's tennis team ended their regular season slate on a high note on Sunday afternoon, finishing to the tune of a 6-3 victory over the Ithaca Bombers at Glazer Arena.

The win improved the Engineers to 13-4 overall on the season and 6-2 in conference play. The win also clinched the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Liberty League Championships being held next weekend, April 28-30 at the Reis Tennis Center at Cornell University in Ithaca.
 
RPI began the match with two straight wins in doubles play, as the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles pairings for the Engineers came out with wins for a 2-0 lead. Nikki Ridenour and Lorna Flores Gonzalez won at No. 1 doubles by an 8-2 final, while Sabrina Grewal and Brooke Bauer won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles. The Engineers fell at No. 2 doubles, going into singles play with the 2-1 advantage.
 
Lorna Flores Gonzalez and Alex Mednikova moved RPI to a 4-1 lead on the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 2 singles. Flores Gonzalez won 6-1, 6-2 while Mednikova won a tighter-contested match 6-4, 7-6.
 
After the Engineers dropped a point at No. 4 singles, Ridenour brought home the match-clinching point at No. 1 singles by a 7-6, 6-4 final score. Bauer added a win at No. 5 singles in straight sets – 6-2, 6-4 – to round out the scoring on the day.
 
The No. 3 seeded Engineers will return to action on Friday, April 28 in the Liberty League Quarterfinals. RPI will once again face No. 6 seed Ithaca at 11:30 a.m. The winner of the match will advance to Saturday's semifinal round against the No. 2 seed Skidmore.
