POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team worked their way to a doubleheader split on Friday afternoon, as they first defeated Vassar College 9-5 before falling 11-3 in game two. RPI moves their record to 23-13-1 overall and 10-5 in Liberty League play, while Vassar moves to 20-15 overall and 7-7 in league action.
Game 1
It was a busy first three innings for both sides, as the score stood 7-3 through the first third of the game. RPI wasted no time, as
Aidan Hicks led off the game with a solo home run to kick start the offense.
After Vassar responded with a run in the bottom of the first, the Engineers put up a four-run second inning that was punctuated with an RBI double from
Cole Paquin before he scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-1 RPI.
Vassar once again responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second to cut the RPI lead to 5-3 before
Joey Saia created havoc in the top of the third. With a runner on, Saia mashed an RBI triple to center field before scoring on a balk to extend the RPI lead to 7-3.
Robbie Reddington helped push the lead out to 9-3 in the top of the fifth inning, as his single to center field scored
Ayush Krishnappa before he helped score another run getting caught in a rundown in a stolen base attempt.
Vassar added runs in fifth and eighth innings but fell short as the Engineers secured the first game of the day.
Game 2
Vassar got the best of the Engineers in game two, pouncing on offense early. Despite an early 2-0 lead by the Brewers, RPI tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second inning. A sacrifice fly from
Phillip Li and an RBI single from
Stephen Koval evened the score.
From that point, it was all Vassar as the Brewers scored three runs in the bottom of the second. An RBI single from Andrew Kanellis was the wrap to the inning to give Vassar a 5-2 lead.
Despite a run from the Engineers in the top of the fourth after Li stole home, Vassar added five runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to extend their lead out to 11-3.
Addison Lee pitched five innings in earning the win for the Brewers, while
Ben Koomey took only his second loss of the season in 4.1 innings of work surrendering five earned runs but striking out six.
The Engineers return to action on Sunday, April 30 at 12 p.m. when they play host to Vassar on Senior Day in Troy.
