No. 24 Softball Snags Sweep at RIT

Engineers Look to Ledger and Pitching in Wins Friday

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team collected another pair of wins on Friday afternoon, as they defeated the RIT Tigers in six innings in both games by final scores of 9-0 and 10-2. RPI improves their record to 28-6 overall with a perfect 10-0 mark in Liberty League play, while RIT falls to 5-27-1 overall and 0-10 in league play.

Game 1
After two innings of scoreless softball, the Engineers broke through with a pair of runs off the bat of Alex Ledger. Her double to the left center field gap scored both Callista Adorno and Gabby Comeau for a 2-0 lead.

The Engineers continued their effort behind a two-hitter in the circle from Alexis Cooke and Brooke Sroczinski. Cooke pitched four innings giving up one hit, while Sroczinski finished up the final two innings giving up just one hit as well. Both struck out three batters apiece.

Ledger was the front end of a scoring spree for the Engineers in the fifth, while book ending the scoring in the sixth. Her sacrifice fly began a four-run fifth, before her RBI single in the sixth to once again score both Adorno and Comeau gave RPI a 9-0 lead into the bottom of the inning.

Comeau and Sydney Speanburg also added RBI singles on their resume for the game, with Comeau also adding a double earlier in the day.

Game 2
RPI wasted no time securing a 6-0 lead in the second game of the day, doing so in the second inning. After the first three runners of the inning reached, Evann McDowell and Sydney Speanburg collected back-to-back RBI singles opening a 2-0 lead. With the bases still loaded, an error, sacrifice fly, and wild pitch brought in four more runs for RPI.

After RIT scored their first run of the day in the bottom of the fourth thanks to RBI singles from Hino and Smith, the Engineers tacked on three more runs in response in the fifth. Ledger added another RBI to her day, slapping a single to left field before Caroline Peel knocked a double to wall in right center field to move the RPI lead to 9-2.

The Engineers added a run in the top of the sixth inning before Sroczinski finished off the Tigers in the bottom of the inning to secure the win.

Erika Holowka continued her strong season in the circle for her 12th win, going four innings and scattering just three hits while striking out three.

The Engineers return to action tomorrow, April 29 when they stay in Rochester to take on league frontrunner, the University of Rochester. The battle for first place in the league standings gets going at 1 p.m.
