Softball Splits Doubleheader With Oneonta

Engineers Extend Win Streak to 10 Before Streak Snapped in Second Game

TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team pushed their winning streak to 10 games after a game one win in walk-off fashion over Oneonta on Monday afternoon, but the Engineers couldn't keep it rolling as they were defeated by the Red Dragons in game two by a 5-3 final in six innings.

Game 1
In the bottom of the seventh inning, freshman Maddy Brooks had her second big knock in as many days, as a single up the middle scored Charlie Smith from second base to help seal RPI's 10th win in a row, a 9-8 victory.

Oneonta attacked the Engineers early, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on three hits. However, an error allowed both runs to score, putting Oneonta up 2-0. However, an RBI double from Gabby Comeau in the bottom of the first scored both Erin Askins and Catherine Worthington to tie the game up at 2-2.

The Red Dragons reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the second inning, as Marissa Nagel singled to right, scoring Sara Cartier to make it 3-2 Oneonta.

The Engineers responded once again, putting up a three-run bottom of the second thanks to RBI knocks from Askins and Worthington highlighting the inning to push their lead to 5-3. After the Red Dragons fought back with another run in the top of the third, RPI once again scored coming through with a pair to take a 7-4 lead.

After scoring a run in the top of the fifth, Oneonta added three runs in the top of the sixth inning, with a double by Kayla Young bringing in the tying and go-ahead runs for an 8-7 lead for the Red Dragons.

RPI made the last move of the game, getting a run in the bottom of the sixth after Askins stole home on a pick off attempt to first base, tying the game at 8-all heading to the final inning of play. After the Engineers held the Red Dragons off the board, a leadoff baserunner set up Brooks' game-winning knock for the 9-8 victory.

Game 2
Both offenses were quiet early, with the first scoring chance of the game going to Oneonta in the top of the fourth inning. With a runner on first base, Megan Palmatier sent a ball off the fence down the left field line. However, Brooks relayed to Worthington, who threw the runner out at the plate trying to score to keep things scoreless.

RPI jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Adorno hit her second home run of the season in solo fashion, giving the Engineers the 1-0 lead.

Oneonta came back with a run in the top of the fifth inning, as a miscue by the Engineers led to the run. RPI had a chance to score in the bottom of the fifth, but a highlight play from Oneonta's Marissa Nagel with one out kept the Engineers at bay and the score tied.

The Red Dragons took advantage of the momentum, scoring four runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 5-1 lead. A double from Sophia Mangone was the big knock of the inning, coming after an RPI error.

RPI didn't go down without a fight, scoring two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI triple from Worthington and sacrifice fly from Adorno to cut the lead to two before the game was called in the top of the seventh inning due to darkness.

The Engineers return to action Wednesday, April 5 at 3 p.m. when they hit the road to take on the Utica Pioneers in a doubleheader.
