Baseball Grabs Come-From-Behind Win, 8-5

Engineers Overcome Early Deficit in Victory Sunday

TROY, N.Y. – Graduate student George Rainer had himself a three-hit afternoon – including the game-tying RBI single – to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 8-5 come-from-behind victory over the Vassar College Brewers at Robison Field Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Engineers improve to 24-13-1 and 11-5 in Liberty League play, while Vassar falls to 20-16 overall and 7-8 in league play.

The win for RPI clinches a home field series next weekend in the Liberty League crossover weekend.

Vassar jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the top of the second inning, as a bases loaded walk brought in the first run in the first. In the top of the second, Vassar got an RBI double off the bat of Ricardo Reyna to bring home a run. A sacrifice fly in the next at-bat from Jack Silvera extended the Brewers lead to 3-0.

Joey Saia responded for the Engineers in the bottom of the second inning, launching a solo home run on a line drive over the left field fence to put RPI on the board to make it 3-1.

The Brewers added a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, as a rain-aided error and wild pitch extended the Vassar lead out to 5-1.

RPI cut the lead to two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, as a groundout from Aidan Hicks with runners on second and third brought home a run to make it 5-2 Vassar. In the next at-bat, Cole Paquin lined a single to left field, pushing the score to 5-3.

The Engineers broke through in the eighth inning, as the Engineers were able to load the bases. With one out, George Rainer sent a line drive through the right side of the infield, scoring Jack Moncur and Saia to tie the game at 5-all.

The single put runners on the corners, and with Rainer on first, Vassar pitcher Zach Magee overthrew first base on a pick-off attempt, allowing Ayush Krishnappa to score from third and give RPI their first lead of the day, 6-5.

As the inning continued, Martin Marintchev gave the big blow of the inning with an RBI single through the right side of the infield, scoring another pair of runs to extend the RPI lead to 8-5.

Rylan Wade - who came in to pitch in the top of the eighth – finished off the Brewers in the ninth to send the Engineers home with the win in his fifth win on the mound this season.

Vassar had eight players with a hit, as Jaden Millstein was the only Brewer with two on the day. Ricardo Reyna and Jack Silvera each added an RBI.
