Softball Falls in Opening NCAA Matchup

Engineers Drop Opening Game to Endicott

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) softball team dropped their opening game of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday afternoon, falling 6-3 to the Endicott Gulls. The loss moves the Engineers to 32-10 on the season, while the Gulls improve to 36-7.

RPI threatened in the bottom of the first inning, as a 11-pitch at-bat from Erin Askins that led to a walk set the tone. With runners on second and third, the Engineers stranded both runners as the score remained scoreless through one.

Holowka was strong over the first 2.1 innings, striking out five over that span. However, Endicott got on the board in the top of the third inning. After a leadoff walk and bunt single, both runners scored on an RBI double off the left field wall from Raven Comtois to give Endicott the 2-0 lead.

The Gulls added another run in the top of the fourth inning, pushing their lead to 3-0. After loading the bases, a run crossed as Evann McDowell made an inning-saving diving play to help force a run out at second. Brooke Sroczinski then got a pop-out to third base, ending the inning and Endicott rally.

RPI got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. A leadoff walk to Alex Ledger preceded an RBI double from Liv Vizzini, as she roped a ball down the left field line to make it 3-1. But the Gulls pushed their lead back out with another pair of runs in the top of the fifth to make it 5-1.

Gabby Comeau helped the Engineers respond in the bottom of the fifth, as she sent a ball into right field to score both Maddy Brooks and Askins to cut the Endicott lead to 5-3. However, Endicott had one more response as they tacked on another run to bring their lead to 6-3.

After putting runners on in the bottom of the seventh and bringing the tying run to the plate, the Engineers couldn't plate any more runs, as the Gulls hung on for the win.

Askins finished the day 3-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, while Comeau added a 2-for-4 afternoon with an RBI.

The Engineers return to action tomorrow, May 19 at either 12:30 or 2 p.m. against the loser of Thursday evening's game between MIT and Simmons.
