ORLANDO, Fla. - The women's tennis tandem of
Lorna Flores Gonzalez and
Nikki Ridenour began their NCAA Tournament match by winning the first game of the first set but the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) duo could not maintain the momentum in losing to Allaire Berl and Eleni Lazaridou of Kenyon College 6-2, 6-4 at the USTA National Campus.
Berl and Lazaridou tallied five straight wins for a 5-1 lead in the first set before Flores Gonzalez and Ridenour climbed to within 5-2. The second set was back-and-forth through the first four games before Kenyon's pair, both of whom are freshmen, won the next two for a 4-2 lead. Flores Gonzalez and Ridenour countered with two wins to even things at 4-4 but a break put Berl and Lazaridou ahead 5-4 and they clinched the match on their serve.
RPI's No. 1 squad, Flores Gonzalez, who is a sophomore, and Ridenour, a freshman, finish the season with a 21-4 overall record with a 4-3 tournament mark. They earned All-America in the fall when they won a first round match at the ITA Cup.
