FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – With two seconds remaining on the clock, graduate student captain
Gabe Terando collected an equalizing goal to help the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's soccer team pull out a 2-2 tie with North Carolina Wesleyan in the second matchup at Mary Washington University.
Terando finished a ball on a helper from
Owen Schnur, after North Carolina Wesleyan broke a 1-1 tie in the 80
th minute. The Battling Bishops saw a goal from Leho Le Louarn on an assist from Tommaso Illario to give them a 2-1 lead before Terando's heroics in the closing seconds.
It was the Engineers that struck first in the opening half, as
Brady Van Epps collected a goal on a dish from
Josh Gaudiano that put Rensselaer up 1-0 in the 24
th minute. It remained 1-0 into the half, before the Battling Bishops even things at 1-1 early in the second half. Tiago Feler scored an unassisted tally in the 49
th minute, evening up the score.
The Engineers dominated on the offensive side of the ball, outshooting North Carolina Wesleyan 27-13 in the match. RPI also allowed only one corner kick all game, taking nine in their offensive zone. Both sides played physical down the stretch, with five yellow cards assessed in total from the 59
th minute on.
Van Epps led the team with five total shots, with three on frame. Goalkeeper
Colin Such made five saves on the afternoon. Rafael Farina made 10 saves for the Battling Bishops, with Santiago Castilla-Sastre leading the way with three shots – all on net.
RPI returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m. when they play host to the Plattsburgh State Cardinals in their 2023 home opener at ECAV Stadium.
