Men's Hockey Collects Win Over St. Lawrence

Muzzatti Tosses Up Four Point Night in Victory Over Saints

TROY, N.Y. - Sophomore Sutter Muzzatti scored a goal and tossed out three assists as the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team won their fourth game in their last five as they defeated the St. Lawrence Saints by a final score of 6-3. With the win, the Engineers improve their record to 7-12-1 overall and 4-5 in league play, while St. Lawrence falls to 5-12-2 overall and 3-4-0 overall in ECAC Hockey.

The Saints were the first to make noise, scoring the first two goals of the game at the 10:34 and 15:34 marks of the first period to take an early 2-0 lead. Drake Burgin scored the first unassisted, while Ty Naaykens did the same but on the shorthanded side of things as St. Lawrence took the two-goal advantage. However, RPI had an answer at the 17:16 mark when CJ Regula took a shot from the blue line that beat Ben Kraws to bring things back to 2-1. Muzzatti earned an assist on the play as the goal sent the Engineers into the locker room aftey the first down by just one score.

That led to a pair of goals to begin the second for the Engineers, as Brad McNeil and John Evans went back-to-back at the 2:06 and 2:41 marks to flip the script and give RPI a 3-2 lead less than three minutes in. McNeil was in the right place at the right time in front of the net, as he got his stick on the puck in the crease, beating the pad of Kraws inside the far post on a pass from Jack Brackett to tie things up. Evans sent a wrist shot from the top of the left wing circle toward the net, finding the twine as Austin Heidemann and Muzzatti each assisted on the go-ahead goal.

As RPI led through a majority of the middle frame, St. Lawrence once again evened the score 15:44 into the period to equal the score at 3-3. Felikss Gavars scored on the power play for the Saints, with Luc Salem and Justin Paul assisting as the score stuck into the final period.

The Engineers collected three unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes, setting up their 6-3 win. Muzzatti opened the gate with the go-ahead game-winning goal. As Heidemann played a puck down in the right wing corner, he played it to Muzzatti who had a lane to the net. The sophomore wrapped the puck by the right leg pad of the goaltender to give the Engineers a 4-3 lead. Just seconds later, it was John Beatson for his first goal of the season as he threw a puck on net that bounced off the skate of a Saints skater to make it 5-3 RPI.

Evans put the icing on the cake late in the third period after St. Lawrence pulled their goalie. Muzzatti gathered the puck in the right wing corner after an odd-man rush up the ice. He would Evans cutting toward the net, and sent a one-timer from the slot into the net for the score. RPI's Jack Watson finished with a game-high 28 saves while Kraws ended with 19 saves for St. Lawrence.

RPI returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. when the Engineers take on the Clarkson Golden Knights in league action.
