TROY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team became winners of three-straight on Tuesday night, as the Engineers downed the Hobart Statesmen by a final score of 77-54 at ECAV Arena. Sophomore
Dylan Matchett scored a team-high 17 points, going 7-for-15 from the floor and 3-for-8 from three-point range.
The Engineers took an early 12-point lead behind an 8-0 run that was highlighted by a pair of three pointers from
Ben Eugster. The run was capped by a
Jonny Angbazo layup with 11:54 to play in the first half as RPI took a 22-10 lead.
Hobart got back into things with a 7-0 run of their own, putting them within two at 24-22 with 7:24 to play in the first half. They took a 26-24 to cap a 16-2 run as it became a back-and-forth game the remainder of the first half.
Dylan Matchett hit a three-pointer right before the buzzer, counting RPI's seventh three-pointer of the opening 20 minutes. As the horn sounded, the Engineers held the slight 37-33 lead.
That hot shooting continued into the second half, as RPI also locked down on defense to run away with the lead. RPI held the Statesmen to zero three-pointers made in the second half, as Hobart went 0-for-7 in the final 20 minutes of play. The Engineers ended up topping their first half total, as they hung 40 points in the second half.
Angbazo ended with 14 points and a team-high five assists, while both Avery and
Ben Eugster collected 11 points apiece. Freshman
Andrew Deppe snagged a team-high seven rebounds.
For Hobart, Alex Moesch went 7-for-13 from the floor for 15 points, while Carter Meshanic added 14 points and a team-high six rebounds for the Statesmen.
RPI returns to action on Friday, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m. when they hit the road to take on Ithaca.
