SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team had their four-game win streak snapped at Union Tuesday night, as the Engineers fell just short in a 91-86 loss to the Garnet Chargers.
86 points is the Engineers' highest total points since their opening game this season against Keuka (89 points), while their 62-point second half is the most in a half this season.
RPI struggled out of the gate, shooting just under 30 percent in the first half but held down the fort defensively to keep the Gernet Chargers within reach. Union held a 32-24 lead at the half, taking advantage of the Engineers on the fast break. The Garnet chargers also hit four threes in the first half, giving them the advantage at the midway point.
As the second half got underway, both sides found a rhythm offensively. Despite the Engineers going off, Union maintained a lead by as many as 10 points with 1:15 to play. However, a jumper from
Dylan Matchett cut the lead to single digits with 1:07 to play.
Ben Eugster caught a steal and fastbreak layup in the following seconds, bringing the lead to six points.
After multiple trips to the line and baskets from RPI, a layup by
Jonny Angbazo brought RPI within possession – 89-86 with 10 seconds to play. However, after a foul on the ensuing inbound, Union collected both three throws to hold on for the five-point win.
Angbazo finished with 22 points, while
Avery Eugster added 15 points and six rebounds. Matchett was the other Engineer in double-digits, putting up 14 points with a team-high seven steals.
For Union, Jack Plesser went for 23 points while Tanner Tedesco also went for 20 points. Luke McGarrity and Edward Baptiste each chipped in with 12 points apiece.
RPI returns to action on Friday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m. when they square off with RIT at ECAV Arena in Liberty League action.
