ALBANY, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team brought the Mayor's Cup back to Troy on Saturday evening, as the Engineers topped the Union Garnet Chargers by a final score of 1-0 behind a shutout from graduate student goaltender
Amanda Rampado.
The win marks the third straight Mayor's Cup victory for the Engineers, and moves their overall record to 5-1 overall at MVP Arena against the Garnet Chargers.
Rampado quietly put together the performance of the night, making just six saves through the first two periods as the RPI defense stood tall over the first 40 minutes of play. Once play moved to the third period, Rampado made eight saves – including a last-second save with 4.8 seconds to play to help clinch the win for the Engineers.
Both sides played the opening period back and forth, with RPI holding the slight shot advantage – 6-2 – with shots on net. However just 47 seconds into the second period, freshman
Georgia Bailey collected a bouncing puck that was poked back into the slot by Union goaltender Sophie Matsoukas. Bailey then sent a wrist shot toward the net, finding the back of it for an unassisted strike to give RPI the 1-0 lead.
Rampado did the rest of the work, despite a hard push by Union in the third period. RPI also had scoring chances int the third period but were also turned away by Matsoukas.
RPI returns to action on Friday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. when the Engineers head back to Houston Field House to take on Yale.
