TROY, N.Y. – Graduate student
Amanda Rampado and freshman
Aylah Cioffi lifted the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's hockey team to a weekend sweep of the Vermont Catamounts, as the Engineers took a 5-1 win on Saturday afternoon. Rampado made 29 saves, while Cioffi collected three points – all in the third period.
Vermont collected the first goal of the game in the first period, as Maddy Skelton got the Catamounts on the board with a shot from the right wing side of the net. Her goal gave the Catamounts their first lead of the weekend. Earning assists on the play were Kaylee Lewis and Bella Parento.
The Catamounts held the 1-0 lead into the second period, until
Marah Wagner evened the score at the 6:16 mark on the power play. Wagner charged the net as
Taylor Larsen skated coast-to-coast into the zone. She found Wagner out front of the net, and that evened the score at 1-1.
RPI took the lead for good with 38 seconds remaining in the second period, as
Morgann Skoda scored her second goal in as many days to give the Engineers the 2-1 lead. Skoda tucked a pass from
MJ Alexander, giving RPI the momentum heading into the third period.
The final frame became the Cioffi show, as she scored twice and assisted the other goal from
Nina Christof as the Engineers took the 5-1 win for the second straight day. Cioffi's first goal was a wrist shot into the top left corner of the net from the slot, while she assisted Christof who found the top right of the net just 39 seconds later.
Cioffi put the game on ice with a shot through traffic after picking up the puck in the slot off a shot from
Isabelle Hardy. Hardy was the helper on both of Cioffi's goals, with Christof also getting an assist on the final one.
The Engineers return to action next Friday, Jan. 12 as they hit the North Country to take on the Clarkson Golden Knights in Potsdam. Puck drop for Friday's showdown is set for 6 p.m.
