RPI Hurt by Penalties Versus Union

TROY, N.Y.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team was hurt by the power play in tonight's 6-3 defeat against Union.

The visiting Garnet Chargers scored four of their six goals on man-up situations, as RPI was assessed 27 penalty minutes on the evening.

Rainers Rullers, Jakob Lee, and John Beaton scored one goal apiece in the setback for the Engineers. Rullers, Will Gilson, Sutter Muzzatti, Tyler Hotson, and Jake Gagnon each logged one assist as well on the evening.

Union netted two goals in the first nine minutes and led 3-1 after one period of action. Rullers struck in the first frame with the help of a Gilson assist.

Trailing by two, RPI struck twice in the first five minutes of the second, including two goals in a three-minute span to level the action at 3-3.

Lee started the stretch with a power-play goal featuring assists from Muzzatti and Hotson before Beaton finished a scoring sequence that included Gagnon and Rullers.

After RPI tied things up, Union would tally the final three goals of the evening to break away for the ECAC victory.

The Garnet Chargers accumulated a 40-30 shot advantage and attempted 23 shots while on the power play.

Looking ahead, the two sides will finish the home-and-home series tomorrow at 7:00 pm at Messa Rink in Schenectady.
