RPI Reclaims Dutchman Shoes Trophy with 24-7 Win over Union

TROY, N.Y.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) football reclaimed the Dutchman Shoes Trophy with a 24-7 victory against rival Union this afternoon in ECAV Stadium.

The Engineers scored the final 17 points and held the visiting Garnet Chargers scoreless across the second half to earn the win in the 74th meeting in which the Shoes trophy was on the line.

Kayden White logged 120 rushing yards and two touchdowns and Anthony DeMatteo threw for 241 yards and a score to propel the RPI offense.

Sean Kelly finished with nine catches for a career-high 149 yards and Paisley Nickelson added 59 receiving yards to the Engineers' air attack. Shane Allison hauled in a receiving touchdown as well for RPI.

After the first quarter ended 0-0, Union struck first on a 67-yard touchdown pass from Patch Flanagan to Gil Rivera in the opening minutes of the second frame.

DeMatteo and the Engineers would quickly respond, with the offense needing only three minutes to go 59 yards before the Allison touchdown.

White accounted for all the points in the second half, as he found pay dirt from six and five yards out, respectively, in the third and fourth quarters.

DeMatteo and Kelly connected downfield for 41 yards one play before White's third quarter score and an Anthony D'Agostino interception immediately set up the Engineers up in the red zone before the touchdown in the fourth.

Mark Lapioli paced the defensive effort with nine tackles, including 2.0 sacks and a forced fumble. D'Agostino registered eight tackles and Succes Frederic and Cole Garrison recorded six takedowns each. Garrison notched a sack as well.

In addition to the two forced turnovers, the RPI defense denied the Garnet Chargers on all four of their fourth-down attempts and did not allow a point in Union's three trips into the red zone. The Engineers forced two missed field goals from the Garnet Chargers as well, one of which was blocked by Nate Sicard.

RPI finishes the 2024 season with an overall record of 5-5, marking the 12th consecutive season (and 22nd time in the last 23 years) which the program has finished with a .500 or better record.
