Engineers Complete Perfect Weekend at VTSU Spartan Classic

CASTLETON, VT- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team defeated Maine-Farmington 75-70 to cap a perfect weekend at the VTSU Castleton Spartan Classic.

Siena Smith connected on 7-of-10 from the field, including all four three-point attempts, to log a team-leading 23 points for the Engineers.

Marley Mueller and Amanda Gallagher finished in double-figures as well for RPI with 17 and 10 points, respectively.

Mueller topped the Engineers with eight rebounds, while Smith added seven boards.

After trailing 20-14 following the opening 10 minutes, the Engineers netted 22 of the 31 points scored in the second quarter to flip an early deficit into the seven-point halftime advantage.

The RPI lead stood at double-digits early in the fourth quarter before Maine-Farmington registered an 18-4 sprint to level the action at 67-all with 2:25 remaining.

From there, RPI owned eight of the final 11 points of the contest to secure the win. Tyler Hormazabal provided a clutch bucket down the stretch, as she knocked down a three with 90 seconds remaining as part of the closing rally.

The Engineers will next look ahead to Wednesday's exhibition contest against the University at Albany, which will feature the Engineers meeting the Great Danes at 2:00 pm at the Broadview Center.
