Men's Basketball Defeats Host Nazareth In Mike Daley Memorial Tournament Championship

ROCHESTER N.Y.- The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team bested host Nazareth 60-54 in the championship matchup of the Mike Daley Memorial Tournament today.

The Engineers did all the right things down the stretch for the second straight night, as RPI successfully maintained a razor-thin advantage throughout the final eight minutes of the second half.

Andrew Deppe finished 7-of-12 from the floor to tally a team-high 19 points for RPI. Deppe also grabbed six rebounds and led RPI with five assists.

Dylan Matchett provided nine points, while Chuck Clemons scored eight and topped the Engineers with nine boards.

Following 14 lead changes and seven tied scores, the Engineers went ahead for good following a pair of free throws from Deppe with 8:43 remaining.

From there, Deppe and Matchett would combine to score 11 of RPI's final 16 points and the Engineers would hold Nazareth to 5-of-13 shooting across the closing stretch to claim the weekend title.

Deppe was named the tournament's most valuable player, while Matchett and Clemons were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Next up, the Engineers will welcome Vermont State University Castleton to ECAV Arena for the team's home-opener at 6:30 pm on Wednesday.
