PRINCETON, N.J. – After a strong showing on the ice last weekend, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's hockey team continued their good play with a 4-3 victory over the Princeton Tigers by a final score of 4-3 from Hobey Baker Rink Friday night.
The Engineers were the first on the board thanks to a power play goal from
Austin Heidemann. After getting a puck from the blue line from
CJ Regula, Heidemann took a big swing that found the back of the net to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead.
Ryan Brushett earned the other assist.
However, the Tigers scored a pair of goals just 13 second apart at the 12:27 and 12:42 marks to turn the tables and take a 2-1 that lasted into the first intermission. Carson Buydens and Michael Young each collected the tallies for Princeton.
RPI had their response just 14 seconds into the second period, as
Jakob Lee tapped in a rebound for the equalizer to make things 2-2. Lee picked up a rebound off a shot from Heidemann, with
Sutter Muzzatti also earning an assist on the play.
The Engineers eventually took the lead, as defenseman
Jack Agnew connected with a goal from the blu line at the 13:08 mark to give RPI back the lead at 3-2. Agnew took a shot with the Princeton defense scrambling after a puck that bounced funny off the boards. Heidemann also earned an assist on that goal as well, giving him a hand in all three goals up to that point.
As the third period rolled in, the quick goals trend continued as Ian Murphy scored on the power play for Princeton just 30 seconds into the last period of play. Noah de la Durantaye and David Jacobs earned assists as the score stood even at 3-3.
It would be Muzzatti at the 11:08 mark for the Engineers to give them a 4-3 lead, as he earned the game-winning goal tucking a
Ryan Brushett pass on a 2-on-1 rush to the net.
Lauri Sertti also earned an assist with the outlet pass to Brushett up the right wing.
Goaltender
Jack Watson kept the Tigers at bay, making 43 saves on the night while Princeton's Ethan Pearson made 14 stops.
RPI returns to action tomorrow, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. when they face-off with No. 9 Quinnipiac in Hamden.
