Men's Hoops Falls in League Semis at St. Lawrence

Engineers Second-Half Struggles Lead to North Country Defeat

CANTON, N.Y. – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team saw their Liberty League Championship aspirations come to a close on Friday night, as the Engineers struggled early in the second half and fell by a final score of 63-48 on the road against the St. Lawrence Saints.

RPI came out of the gate firing, going up 17-4 early in the first half – which included a 10-0 run to begin the game. St. Lawrence climbed back within four by the 7:47 mark remaining in the first half, as the Engineers maintained a lead. At the end of the half, RPI led 25-21 thanks to a pair of free throws from freshman Andrew Deppe before the break.

St. Lawrence jumped ahead in the second half less than two minutes in, as they found their stroke on offense. An early 8-0 run for the Saints flipped them into the lead, and they hung on the rest of the way. St. Lawrence shot exactly 50 percent from the field in the second half, while the Engineers went 25 percent.

Avery Eugster led the Engineers with a 15 point night along with a team-high 10 rebounds for a double-double. Jonny Angbazo also finished in double-digits with 13 points and a team-high six assists. Dylan Matchett also chipped in with 11 points.

For the Saints, Gavin Maccaulay put up a game-high 21 points on 8-for-14 shooting – including 4-for-7 from three-point range.

The Engineers outrebounded the Saints 36-20, but turned the ball over 19 times to St. Lawrence's three.
