TROY, N.Y. – After falling to Union last Tuesday night, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men's basketball team helped split the season series with a 66-52 victory over the Garnet Chargers at ECAV Arena Friday night. With the win, RPI has now won 11 of their last 13 games, and eight of their last nine.
Union led for most of the first half, growing a lead by as many as eight points as they took a 27-19 lead with 3:11 to play in the opening 20 minutes. However, a few defensive stops down the stretch helped the Engineers climb back within one possession, giving Union just a 32-29 lead at the midway point.
The tables turned in the second half, as the Engineers caught fire on offense, finishing the game shooting just over 57 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. Union shot just 25 percent from the floor in the second half, with four of their seven field goals coming from three-point range.
RPI took the lead for good at the 15:22 mark, after a jumper from
Dylan Matchett gave the Engineers a 39-38 lead they did not have to look back from.
Avery Eugster led the charge with an 18-point night, while Matchett followed up with a 16-point performance. The Engineers outscored the Garnet Chargers 42-16 in the paint.
RPI returns to action tomorrow on Saturday, Feb. 3 when they host Senior Day at ECAV Arena against Ithaca.
