TROY, N.Y. – In a closely contested matchup for most of the game, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's basketball team was hampered by a tough second quarter as they were defeated by the Union Garnet Chargers by a final score of 59-42.
The first quarter was closely contested, as Union held just a one-point lead into the second frame. From there, RPI struggled going just 3-for-12 from the field in the quarter scoring just seven points. That allowed Union to pull away with a double-digit lead at the midway point.
Union maintained their distance in the third quarter before both offenses put points up in the final 10 minutes. Despite just one field goal in the fourth quarter, RPI made up for it with 14 free throw attempts, converting 12.
Three Garnet Chargers finished in double-figures, led by a 14-point night from Jelena Perovic, while Kennedy Clark and Emma Riley each had 12 points. For the Engineers,
Siena Smith and
Tyler Hormazabal each led the way with nine points apiece.
RPI returns to action tomorrow on Saturday, Feb. 3 when they host Senior Day at ECAV Arena against Ithaca.
